R.W.Bro. George Bonham’s last meeting as Mark Provincial Grand Master for Mark Province Northants and Hunts
The Installation meeting of the Northamptonshire, Huntingdonshire and Bedfordshire Installed Commanders Lodge of Royal Ark Mariner saw the last meeting that R.W.Bro. George Bonham was able to attend as the Provincial Grand Master of the Northants & Hunts Mark Province.
The meeting, held under Dispensation at Sheaf Close on the 9th June, was attended by 84 brethren from the Province and numerous guests from other Provinces. Included were the Past Deputy Grand Master, R.W.Bro. Keith Emmerson and the Provincial Grand Masters of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Warwickshire and Past Provincial Grand Masters of Bedfordshire and East Anglia.
The Installation meeting was opened by Past Commander, W.Bro. Richard Bedells, who welcomed the Provincial Grand Master and honoured guests. Having been offered the Lodge sceptre, the Provincial Grand Master accepted it, took the chair and commenced to install W.Bro. Doug Peacock as Commander of the Lodge. At the conclusion of the meeting Mark Master Masons joined the brethren to hear a presentation by R.W.Bro. Roger Mac, Provincial Grand Master for Warwickshire, on an eventful and successful career as a motor racing driver.
Roger taught himself to drive at the tender age of nine with his brother on waste ground at the rear of his father’s garage and scrap car business in the Midlands. It was a short step from there, that as a teenager in the 1960’s he moved into circuit racing driving many well-known sports car racing marques including Jaguar, Ferrari and Porsche where he gathered numerous trophies. A spell in Formula 3 alongside names like Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart and then into long distance Monte Carlo events saw more successes. Following accidents he retired only to return for a period in the 1980’s driving once again some of his previous cars in classic events, once again gathering more trophies. Roger illustrated his talk with a computer slide presentation of photographs and memorabilia of his career and his talk was very well received by all present.
The brethren retired for an enjoyable festive board during which the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Bob Stokes presented to the Provincial Grand Master a retirement gift of a cheque for over £1100 which had been generously donated by brethren of every Mark Master Mason and Royal Ark Mariner Lodge in the Province.
Earlier in the day Avril was delivered a bouquet of flowers from us for her 11 years of support to George.
George’s retirement marks the culmination of 11 successful years in office where he has proudly supported his Lodges and represented the Mark Province on many occasions across the length and breadth of England and Wales. To make Friday 9th June even more special, it marked his 69th Birthday and a card was signed and “Happy Birthday” sung with gusto by all present!
Provincial Grand Secretary.
